The Importance of a First Piano Teacher – Reflections from Chopin Piano Arts in Scottsdale

At Chopin Piano Arts, where we lead in the area of piano teaching in North Scottsdale, I recently found myself recording Chopin’s early Nocturne in C minor at our studio’s beautiful Steinway model D. As I played through its haunting melody, memories of my own childhood piano lessons came flooding back—specifically, of my first teacher in Poland, Professor Elżbieta Wyszyńska. I was no more than ten or eleven when I first studied this piece under her guidance. To this day, I still keep her handwritten notes tucked inside my well-worn score.

It’s a powerful reminder that a child’s first piano teacher shapes so much more than just their initial steps in music.

The Piano Teacher —Foundation Matters

While bios of concert pianists often mention the big-name conservatory professors at the end of their training, it’s usually the earliest teachers who leave the deepest imprint. A capable first teacher lays the technical and musical groundwork that determines how far a student can eventually go.

I was lucky. From the very beginning, Professor Wyszyńska taught me how to approach the piano with a relaxed wrist and a natural sense of movement. This kind of foundation proved essential during the most intense years of my training—when I was practicing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto or Liszt’s Sonata in B minor for hours a day. Thanks to her, I’ve never experienced the tendonitis or shoulder injuries that plague so many serious musicians.

For parents looking into serious piano lessons in Scottsdale (by the way, the only piano lessons worth pursuing are serious piano lessons), or adults considering piano lessons for themselves, this should be a central concern: Who teaches your child first truly matters.

Finding Quality Piano Instruction in Scottsdale

At Chopin Piano Arts, we often meet students who began elsewhere with casual instruction and now face technical roadblocks. The belief that you can “start anywhere” and fix problems later is a myth, and frankly dangerous to future development and technical good health. Like learning a language or a sport, the beginning shapes the journey.

The C minor Nocturne I played—published posthumously in 1860—is often recommended as an early introduction to Chopin’s music. But don’t let its “easier” designation fool you. Even this piece requires expressive rubato, lyrical phrasing, and coordination between the flowing right hand and the steady left. With careful guidance, students not only gain confidence, but also learn to play with depth and character.
